Phinizy in October

First thing first –> Breakfast! (short video)

Ancient silos greet you near the parking area

This fellow may greet you too (watch your step below, as you bird watch above).

Lots of gators. That fence is not there to keep them in or out (plenty of space under fence for them to come/go). It is to discourage folks from entering the canal area. This one was only interested in sunning.

The back side of Mayor’s Fishing Pond

Swampish

Some trails made effective use of boardwalks

This pond is bordered by LOTS of yellow flowers. Seems to be a favorite spot for water birds to feed (see video at top of this post), and duck families.

Bridge on the Blue Trail

One of several shelters, for learning/lectures.

The view from that shelter. This scene looks MUCH better than a picture can show.

Plenty of moss covered trees

One of the ‘cells’ (purification ponds) in the distance. Gators are spotted in most of them. There is a system letting nature purify water from the city (Augusta area) as it approaches the Savannah River. Visit https://phinizycenter.org/ to learn how it works.

the 3 Ton Bridge. Connects the Equalization Pond to the Constructed Wetland Cells.

I hike there from time to time. There are a couple of ways to get in a 3 mile (or more) walk, and enjoy nature. In summer, with little shade around the Cells, it can be a bit hot/humid (welcome to the south).
